The Santa Clarita Diet – Quick Notes
I love this Netflix show.
I think it’s what you’d get if the Walking Dead and Shaun of the Dead had a baby. Sure, the writing can be cheesy and hokey, and it’s a bit predictable with where they go with certain plot elements, but it’s still an enjoyable show.
The show looks at the shenanigans that ensue when a suburban milf, I mean wife, turns into a an undead corpse that has to feed on human flesh while at the same time maintaining a semblance of a normal life to the world beyond her family and a small group of close friends.
The Santa Clarita Diet stars Drew Barrymore. Barrymore plays Sheila, who is a realtor in Santa Clarita. She is also the aforementioned milf/ zombie. Timothy Olyphant plays her husband Joel, who is also Sheila’s “real-a-tor” partner and Liv Hewson plays their teenage daughter Abby. Hewson has a donk and before you go all crazy, she’s 21 in real life, so yeah baby… yeah.
There is gore on the show, but most of it is implied. The deaths mostly happen off screen, but you do get to see the aftermath of some of the deaths in the form of blood splatter and body parts. There isn’t any nudity to speak of, but there is a lot of implied sex. As part of her zombiness, Sheila has an insatiable sexual appetite as well so the topic comes up often.
At first, Sheila and Joel think that Sheila is the only zombie in town, but as the show progresses we come to find out that there are indeed other zombies in Santa Clarita. We also learn that each zombie is dealing with their Santa Clarita Diet needs in their own special way.
Probably, the most troubling aspect of the show, is the mortician. You’ll know it when you see it.
If you’re looking for something to binge, both seasons of the show are streaming now on Netflix. Go check it out.
I just started watching it yesterday and although it’s not my usual zombie fare (I usually prefer it a little more serious and scary) I am loving it so far. I only managed to squeeze in the first two episodes but I’m looking forward to continuing. Drew Barrymore is hilarious and delivers perfect comedic timing. And I love that you included the “real-a-tor” because that really stuck out for me too haha.
Awesome, thanks for the comment!
