Orlando The Most Survivable City In A Zombie Outbreak?
I got a note from Laura, thanks Laura! telling me about this article that listed Orlando as the most survivable city in a zombie outbreak. OK, so the article is over on a real estate site, which I won’t hold against them but I do have this sense that maybe I’m being played for links or whatever but that’s a story for another day.
Here’s the link:
Their methodology was interesting. They took a look at how many hospitals, pharmacies, gun stores, sporting goods stores, grocery stores and gas stations there were in a metro area. They then ranked the cities and gave them a score. After they crunched their numbers, Orlando came out on top.
I do have some issues with their methodology. Namely on the medical front.
Without a qualified medic in the group, it doesn’t matter how many hospitals etc. are near you. I couldn’t perform an appendectomy to save anyone’s life. I also doubt that I could help anyone deliver a baby.
So, I feel that having a medically qualified person in the group is more important than having access to medical facilities although access to medical facilities is indeed important.
Personally, I’d want to be somewhere with lots of fresh water and an abundant food supply. After a certain amount of time, food in the grocery stores will either go bad or run out. I like the idea of being near the ocean (Orlando is near the ocean, right?) since you can always fish. Assuming the fish are not undead.
Being by the everglades gives you lots of fresh water and lots of other game that you can hunt or trap to eat. You can also raid some of the farms nearby and get some fresh fruits and veggies that would eventually just start to grow fallow. The warmish weather would mean mild winters which all increases your chances of survival.
Overall, Orlando is not a bad pick. Sure you’d have to deal with the occasional hurricane, but those are usually survivable and short lived. Although, it does bear to mention that all of the amusement parks and the crowds associated with them would be an issue. Specially once they turn.
What do you think about Orlando as a survival place?
BTW, that’s a photo of Austin TX. I don’t have any photos of Orlando and I didn’t feel like searching for one that I could use.
